180 Socotra

Socotra Island, a breathtaking destination, a natural paradise that must be seen to be believed. A must visit for nature enthusiasts and lovers of the great outdoors. Dubbed as the “Galápagos of the Indian Ocean”, Socotra’s exceptionally rich flora and fauna make it globally important for biodiversity conservation. This most isolated landform of continental origin is located off the coast of Yemen. Its seclusion has allowed for the preservation of its indigenous language, customs, and beliefs, all of which are deeply rooted in the island’s natural environment and its rich historical background. Whether you’re a nature lover, history buff, or just looking to get away from it all, Socotra Island should be your destination of choice. A haven that is not be missed

Our trip started from Abu Dhabi International Airport where our 12-girl group congregated. I was going through a myriad of emotions; a range between excitement and anticipation, a bit of dread this was going to be my first ever full-on outdoor camping trip. Yes, I have never done that! But, here I was, about to embark on a seven-day trip to uncover and share the secrets of the most beautiful yet mysterious island in the world, and what secrets we discovered!

Socotra is a world unlike any other. It boasts a unique topography that is as diverse as it is stunning. The island is dominated by a central limestone plateau, with towering cliffs, caves, and rock formations that are perfect for exploring.

The coastline is dotted with serene beaches, crystal-clear waters, white sand dunes, and vibrant coral reefs that are teeming with marine life. It was mind-blowing to witness a remarkable array of species in their natural habitats.

The flora of Socotra Island is a testament to the island’s significance as a biodiversity hotspot and provides a window into the incredible multitude of life on our planet. From the famous dragon blood tree to the unusual bottle tree, to the captivating desert rose, the island’s flora is truly exceptional. Additionally, Socotra Island has a rich cultural history, with a distinct language and traditional way of life that has been passed down through generations. These factors all contribute to the significance of Socotra Island, making it a destination that is unique and vibrant.

As the island has been inhabited for thousands of years and has a long history of seafaring and trade, this has left its mark on its people and their traditions. We were very privileged to have met with a local family who warmly welcomed us into their home The Socatrans are not only known for their rich cultural and historical heritage, but also for their resilience, resourcefulness, kindness, and generosity. We were treated to a beautiful breakfast spread of fresh goats’ milk, karak tea, fresh homemade yoghurt, and butter. What can I say? It was organic produce at its best. Everything we had tasted phenomenal.

Our days were spent exploring what has been described as one of the most 'alien' looking places in the world I don’t take superlatives lightly so when I say this is one of the most incredible places I’ve seen, trust that it must really be a special place. Qalaynsiya, Shoab, Zaheq, Hayaft, Diksam, DI Hamri Delisha, Irsal to name a few of the many spots we visited.

We enjoyed miles and miles of their unspoilt scenery and unique natural habitats. We brushed shoulders with Dragon blood trees, hiked up incredible terrains and explored karstic caves, enjoyed swimming in pristine clear turquoise waters and walked on the softest white sand beaches. At night, we slept in tents under a cascade of stars and woke up to glorious sunrises casting their colours on the waves of the Arabian Sea sweeping on beaches near our campsites. To top it all off, I had the pleasure of the best group of guides and travel buddies anyone could wish for. This was a trip filled with many firsts and uncountable moments of laughter that are forever engraved in our memories.

Did the 180 in the title give you pause? By now, you are probably wondering what it refers to? Well, here it is:

A 7-day captivating journey of the senses. A holistic experience in seeing, hearing, and feeling every aspect of this magnificent island and experiencing all its splendours. Socotra Island is an exceptional and captivating destination, offering travellers an escape from the modern world and a chance to immerse themselves in a vibrant and diverse ecosystem. Will I go back to it? In a heartbeat!

TRAVEL TIPS:

Visa requirements :.

As a Bahraini passport holder I do not need to apply for a visa . The airport is really very small so once you are done with the passport control you just pick up your luggage and out in a minute .

After luggage collection you can get money exchange at the forex bureau .THere is just one there biut people are happy to accept US dollars or Emirati Dirhams

Keep in mind that you can only have access to the internet if you have an Emirati or local SIM card . I suggest getting an sim from Airalo However keep in mind that even with that the net is very slow and most times unaccessible

I avoided eating any uncooked veggies or fruits . but hates a personal choice . Drink bottled water only.

Pile up the sunscreen and keep it in your backpack at all times . Keep a first aid kit but meds are not readily available depending on where you are .the more remote you are the less likely you will have access to pharmacies (nausea, anti diarrhoea ,paracetamol ,lip protection from the heat ) .

A power bank is a must .

Cameras and lenses :

-Travel with a minimum of two camera bodies. Easier than switching lenses. Fujifilm xt4/nikon z7ii

-bring as many camera batteries as possible.

-wide angle lens 14-24mm ( I like to use it in landscapes /portraits).for landscapes I like to use a midrange zoom nikkor 24-120mm . A long range zoom 100400mm wildlife andfor a more compressed landscape

Clothing :

  • Get enough clothes for a week you won’t have time to do laundry . t-shirts and hiking pants ,hiking pants /boots/hats / joggers

Trainers and sandles with support. do not bring flats .

Sunglasses//sunscreen/ shampoo/lotion/soap/hats/ a full medical kit (paracetamol,vita c , anti nausea, anti diarrhea , hand sanitiser )

Keep in mind the luggage limit is 20kg and they are very religous about it .
